Born in Edinburgh, Dougie started his football career with Hibernian before moving south of the border in order to take up a teacher (PE) career and joining Shepshed Charterhouse, in order to be close to his studies. After a short spell with the Leicestershire club, he joined Kettering Town in December 1983, and remained with the Poppies for some 10 years, making some 373 first team appearances, scoring 45 goals. In the summer of 1992, the midfielder moved to neighbours Corby Town to captain the side. With the Steelmen in financial difficulties, the offer of £3,000 from Diamonds in March 1994 proved to be an offer they couldn’t refuse, and he played nine games for Diamonds at the end of that season. He scored on his debut at Hinckley Town, and then became a key player during the 1994/1995 season as the Diamonds adjusted to life in the Southern League Premier and played in all but two games. The following season however, he found himself out of contention the following season, and joined Burton Albion in September 1995.

He played two season for the Brewers, before moving back to Northamptonshire and joining Rothwell Town as a defender for the 1997/1998 season. He was back at Corby Town in August 1998 and was made assistant manager. After becoming Sports Director at a Leicester Sports College, Dougie joined Leicester Senior League side Quorn in the summer of 2000, and helped them to promotion into the Midland Alliance in 2001. He took over the reigns as player/manager, gradually retiring from playing, and spent some four years with the club. In May 2006, he resigned as manager, and after a short spell at Loughborough Dynamo and Corby Town, he became manager at Stamford in January 2008. He departed ‘by mutual consent’ in April 2009, and become manager at Quorn again, this time the club being in the Northern Premier Division One South. After a poor start to the 2011/2012 season, Dougie resigned as manager on 27 August 2011, immediately after a 5-0 defeat to Grantham Town. He went back to take over at Quorn in early 2015, staying there until late December 2017.
