David started his career with Wigan and after signing professional forms, went on the play over 230 games in four seasons, scoring some 50 goals. In June 1987, he made a big money move to Ipswich Town who paid £80,000 for his services. In five seasons at Portman Road, he scored 37 League goals, in 134 appearances, scoring a further two goals while on loan to Port Vale. Leicester City paid £250,000 for him in July 1992, and he made 108 appearances for the Foxes during his four year stay. He went out on loan to Port Vale again in February 1994. David then returned to Wigan Athletic in March 1996 for £125,000, before going to Wrexham on a free transfer in June 1999. It was from Wrexham that David arrived on loan at Nene Park on 29 January 2000. He scored six times in 16 appearances until the end of that season, at which point he retired from the game, joining the PFA.

David took up a coaching role with his former club Wigan Athletic in 2002, before following manager Paul Jewel to Derby County where he became Head of the Youth Academy. After Jewel’s departure in January 2009, he became caretaker manager at Derby County for just a single game, before the arrival of Nigel Clough. He left Derby at the end of that season, and in the summer of 2010, he became part of the coaching staff at Tranmere Rovers. In 2011 he began coaching at Blackburn Rovers, and became assistant head coach there in early 2017, and remains as First-team coach working with Tony Mowbray into the 2021/22 season.
