Scott started his career as an 18 year old striker at Bradford City in 1992,but in two seasons, only made five first team appearances before being released and signing for Bristol City on 18 February 1994. During his time at Ashton Gate, he went on loan to Torquay United (October 1995), Plymouth Argyle (January 1996) and Scarborough (March 1996). On 14 February 1997, Cardiff City paid £50,000 for his services but with only 2 goals in 36 games he moved to Torquay United on 26 March 1998. His goalscoring ability took off while he was with the Gulls, and a £100,000 move to Brentford on 19 February 1999 followed. After remaining with Brentford for the following two seasons scoring 23 goals in 111 games, he was released at the start of the 2001/02 season with Brian Talbot bringing him to Nene Park on 13 September 2001.

He started well with 5 goals in 21 games, but then struggled to find form and most of his subsequent appearances were off the bench. He went out on a one month loan to Exeter City in December 2002 and was eventually released in early 2003, joining Shrewsbury Town on 27 March on a monthly contract. He only played four game for Shrewsbury before going part-time, joining Weymouth in the summer. He moved to Bath City on 9 January 2004 where he spent five seasons finding his goalscoring touch again and helping them to promotion into the Conference South in May 2007. The following season, a neck injury in February 2008 meant he had to sit out the rest of the season and he was released in the summer after 78 goals in 170 appearances to allow him time with his ill mother. In August 2008, he joined Unibond Division One South side Sheffield FC scoring twice on his debut. On 31 December 2008, he joined Conference South side Weston-super-Mare and remained there until May 2009 when he retired from the game.
