The Danish goalkeeper joined Reading from AD Copenhagen shortly after his 18th birthday in January 2007 as an understudy to Marcus Hahnemann and Adam Federici, and has made a number of appearances on the bench. He went out on a month’s loan to Torquay United in February 2008 and following the recall of Dale Roberts by Nottingham Forest, arrived at Nene Park as an emergency seven day loan on 15 April 2008. After initially failing to get clearance for the game at Stafford Rangers, he made his debut against the club he had just left, Torquay United. He returned to Reading on 23 April. On 9 December 2008, Mikkel went out on a 7day emergency loan to Brentford, before another loan spell with Brighton & Hove Albion in March 2009. On 1 September 2009, he joined Bristol Rovers on a half season loan which was later extended until the end of the 2009/2010 season. He started the following season with a similar loan deal with Bristol Rovers and made 61 appearances in total, before returning to Reading, In June 2011, he played for the Danish Under-21’s at the European Championships. On 18 August 2012, he went on a one month loan deal with cash strapped League One side Portsmouth, and he made his debut on the same day against Bournemouth. His loan was extended by a further month on 18 September 2012, and he eventually returned to Reading on 20 November 2012. With two years still remaining on his Reading contract, he joined Danish Superliga side Randers on 11 June 2013 – on a season long loan deal. He signed with FC Midtjylland in 2015, returning there in 2018 after a spell with Lyngby. In 2021 he moved to Viborg FC.
