Alan started his career with the youth set up at Tottenham Hotspur and after an initial two year contract, joined Lincoln City in the summer of 1999, earning the title of young player of the year in his first season with the club. The popular goalkeeper went on to make a total of 395 appearances, holding the club record for the number of clean sheets – 106 in 351 League games. A hamstring injury forced him out of his final game for the Imps in April 2008 after nine years at the club, but not before making a vital penalty save. Alan penned a two-year deal with Diamonds manager Garry Hill on 9 July 2008.

Alan kept a clean sheet in his first senior appearance for the Diamonds on 26 July 2008 as they beat League 1 side Peterborough United to win the NFA Maunsell Cup Final. He went on to keep a clean sheet in his first league game at Eastbourne Borough two weeks later. A stomach injury at the end of September 2008 forced him to have surgery, leading to the return of Dale Roberts to the club. On his return to fitness, he was unable to regain his place in the side.

Alan left the club by mutual consent on 8 January 2009 after just 13 appearances (including 4 clean sheets), and joined Mansfield Town for the remainder of the season. He was offered an extended contract in March to keep him with the Stags until the summer of 2011, but a hip injury kept him side-lined for some six months in October 2010. In May 2012, his contract was extended for a further season. Alan was released by the Stags on 16 June 2014 after some 201 appearances.
