Joe was a product of the Scunthorpe United youth system, and the young defender was offered a professional contract in 2006. His contract was extended the following year and he was a regular in the reserve team, although he had yet to make a competitive appearance when he came to Nene Park. Initially arriving for a short trial, his one month loan became official on 7 November 2008. He only made two appearances for Diamonds, both in the Hillier Senior Cup, but failed to play a League game. Joe returned to Scunthorpe United at the end of his loan, but was released in May 2009. After a trial at York City, Joe joined NPL Premier side Buxton in August 2009 and went on the make 58 appearances, scoring twice before joining Conference North side Corby Town on 4 March 2011. After seeing out the season with the Steelmen, he joined NPL Division One South side Ilkeston in the summer of 2011, helping them to promotion via the Play-Offs. Joe had difficulty maintaining a first team spot the following season, and was transfer listed on 27 November 2012, before leaving on 23 January 2013 to join NPL Premier rivals  Frickley Athletic. In September 2017 he moved to Goole AFC.
