Gareth was born in Holywell, North Wales and began his career at Peterborough United as a trainee before signing professional contracts. He went out on loan to Boston United during the 1998/99 season, and also made the Welsh Under-21 squad. A further loan spell followed at  Boston United in August 2004, before joining Mansfield Town in January 2005 on a loan deal which was made permanent on 25 January, after some 122 appearances for the Posh. He remained with the Stags for three seasons, playing over 140 games before being released after their relegation to the Conference. He joined Diamonds prior to their pre-season tour of Portugal in the summer of 2008, and was signed on a one year contract on 21 July 2008, making his first senior appearance for the club as they his former club Peterborough United to win the NFA Maunsell Cup Final on 26 July. He went on to make his league debut for the Diamonds in their 1-0 opening day victory over Eastbourne Borough. Although playing most games in the early part of the 2008/09 season, he picked up an injury in December 2008, and with the arrival of left back Kurt Robinson on loan from Ipswich Town, he was unable to regain his place in the side. He went out on loan to Barrow AFC on 26 March 2009 for the remainder of the season, and was released in May 2009.

In late July 2009, he signed for AFC Telford United, but ater just 6 games, went back to Barrow AFC at the end of August, before being released by them in May 2010. On 30 July 2010, Gareth joined Conference North side Boston United, extending his contract in May 2012 for another season. After 102 appearances for the Pilgrims, it was announced on 22 February 2013 that following the birth of his son, he would leave the club by mutual consent to be nearer his home town and on 25 February, he joined Conference North side Corby Town. He left the club on 13 May 2014, and joined newly promoted NPL Division One South side Spalding United as a player/coach. He ended his career in April 2015 after a spell at Stamford.
