Charles was a product of the Southend United youth system, earning a professional contract at the club. He initially went out on loan to Bishop’s Stortford at the start of the 2006/07 season, before going to Cambridge United in January 2007, again on a loan deal. After undergoing a knee operation at the start of the following season, he went out on loan to Welling United in November 2007 for a two month period in order to gain match fitness. He joined Diamonds on 21 February 2008 on loan until the end of the season, but was recalled by Southend United on 30 March 2008. During the 2008-09 season he spent time on loan with Salisbury City, and was released by Southend at the end of that season. He signed for Crawley Town on a permanent basis on 26 May 2009, but left at the end of just the one season despite being their leading goal scorer. On 1 July 2010, he joined relegated Grimsby Town as they prepared for their first season in the Conference, but suffered a knee injury in January and failed to regain a regular place in the side. Charles was released at the end of the season and on 27 June 2011, he joined newly promoted League Two side AFC Wimbledon. Injury affected the number of appearances he made, and he scored just once in 21 games for the Dons, mainly as a substitute, and he was released at the end of January 2012. On 21 March 2012, Charles joined Conference South side Eastbourne Borough on a deal until the end of the season. He remained with the club for the start of the 2012/2013 season, but then left the club on 6 October 2012. After a short break, he joined Conference South side Salisbury City on 6 November 2012 on a non-contract basis, looking to earn a permanent deal. He went on to play some 21 games for the Whites, scoring twice, but left at the end of the season. On 22 July 2013, Charles signed for Isthmian Premier side Margate. He was released by Margate on 1 May 2014. He has since become the Fulham Youth Team Inclusion Officer.
