David started his career at Oldham Athletic, before being given an opportunity to sign for Manchester United as a trainee in July 1995. The ‘poaching’ cost the Premiership side a £20,000 fine. After failing to break into the first team, Brown was subsequently loaned out to Hull City in March 1998 where the move was eventually made permanent with Brown becoming a first team regular at Boothferry Park. He made 123 appearances and scoring 21 goals for the Tigers.

He had an unsuccessful trial with Torquay United in September 2001 and spent a short period in Australia before returning for a second trial with the Gulls later in the year following a change in management. After just a couple of appearances however, he was let go, and joined Chester City. In August 2002, he joined Telford United, and the following season joined Hereford United where he stayed until March 2005, when he signed a two year contract with Accrington Stanley. David had a loan spell with Burton Albion before arriving at Nene Park on a one month loan deal from Stanley on 31 January 2008.

After just 5 games and no goals, he returned to Accrington, and went on a further one month loan to Northwich Victoria on 29 March 2008 before being released by Stanley in the summer. He joined York City on non contract forms, before moving to AFC Barrow in October 2008. Again, his stay was unsuccessful, and he joined Conference side Forest Green Rovers on 15 January 2009. Following the dismissal of manager Jim Harvey at the end of July, David took over as caretaker until the appointment of Dave Hockaday in September. He left during the following summer, and joined Wrexham on 6 July 2010. He was released in May 2011. He retired from the game and by 2018 he was a scout with Motherwell.
