The former Republic of Ireland international started his career at League of Ireland First Division side Kilkenny City scoring on his debut in October 1990 and it was during his time there that he was scouted by Brighton & Hove Albion, who signed him in March 1991. At the end of the following season however, Dave was signed by Irish side Longford Town and following two years at the club, he returned to England, being snapped up by Millwall for £15,000. During his time with the Lions, he made 152 appearances, scoring 10 times. On 7 October 1998, he joined Northampton Town for £80,000 and in three seasons with the Cobblers, again notched up 18 goals in 124 games. The attacking midfielder signed for Oxford United in August 2001, and spent two seasons at the Kassam Stadium, before spending the following two season with Bristol Rovers. Dave joined Diamonds on 19 May 2005 on a free transfer, and he was named Club Captain by manager Barry Hunter. He lost this role the following season after the arrival of Chris Hope, but he led out the team for his final game against Burton Albion in April 2007.
He was released on 1 May 2007, and joined Brackley Town as their captain. In July 2009, he joined Southern League Premier side Oxford City, but decided to announce his retirement from the game in May 2011, after some 463 professional appearances.
