After showing great promise and skill in the youth set-up and reserve team, local lad Marcus was named on the bench for Diamonds Division 2 matches against Bournemouth, Stockport County and Barnsley in the 2003 / 2004 season and soon made his full debut at Brighton & Hove Albion. The following season, he made a further three starts plus eight as substitute, and in the summer of 2005 was rewarded with a six month professional contract. Following a string of fine performances at the beginning of the 2005 / 2006 campaign, which saw him become a first team regular, Marcus’ contract was soon renegotiated by the club.
Shoulder problems which required an operation reduced his opportunities during the 2006 / 2007 season, and although the club offered him a new deal at the end of that season, he turned this down and was placed on the transfer list on 11 May 2007 as a result. He was taken off that list two months later after deciding to remain at the club for the coming season, but his shoulder problems meant that he was not able to start during the early games. He made it back by mid-September, and quickly re-established his place in the Diamonds side. His season was especially memorable for the goal he scored at the Memorial Stadium against Bristol Rovers in the FA Cup – an effort from almost on the half-way line which earned special praise from Alan Shearer on Match of the Day. Further injury meant he missed the end of the season after helping his side to the Setanta Shield final. The 2008 / 2009 season saw him make 39 appearances in the Blue Square Premier, 11 of them as substitute, including an unbroken run from the start of November until the end of the season.
He left the club at the end of May 2009 and joined fellow Conference side Oxford United, but his appearances were limited, and he went on loan to Kettering Town on 24 November 2009. On 7 January 2010, the move was made permanent signing a deal until the end of the season, with the option of a twelve month extension. Following financial problems at Kettering, Marcus went on loan to fellow Conference side Mansfield Town on 24 November 2011, with a view to sign an 18 month contract with the Stags in the January transfer window, but was recalled to Kettering Town on 4 January 2012 and the permanent move cancelled. He left the Poppies at the end of the season following their relegation, and signed for Conference side Tamworth on 5 July 2012. Marcus left at the end of the season, and signed a one year deal with fellow Conference side Forest Green Rovers on 17 July 2013. He ended up staying at the New Lawn until the middle of 2017, moving on to join Wrexham, where he spent most of the 2017-18 season. After spending over 10 seasons at the top level of non-league football he dropped down to join Kettering Town prior to the 2018-19 season.
