Andy had started his career with Southend United, spending some six seasons at Roots Hall and making some 165 appearances. The tall central defender attracted the attention of some of the bigger clubs and in July 1995, he made a big money move to Birmingham City for a $450, 000 transfer fee. He made 40 League appearances for the Blues under Barry Fry, before he moved with Fry to Peterborough United in November 1996. In 6½ years at London Road, he made 316 appearances, remaining loyal despite many offers from other clubs. In his final game for the Posh against Port Vale however, he was sent off. Andy joined Diamonds on 5 March 2003 as they pushed for the Division 3 title, remaining for the following season.
He left in May 2004, and rejoined Southend United. After a further 39 appearances, he went out on a one month loan to Grays Athletic in January 2006. He was released in May 2006, and spent his final playing season with Aldershot. After retirement, he joined St.Albans City as Assistant Manager in July 2007, before taking up the post of Youth Team Manager with Leyton Orient on 21 May 2009, signing a two year contract. In 2017 he moved to a coaching role with the Football Association, working with the age group teams. He was put in charge of the England U20s side prior to the 2021/22 season.
