Adam began his goalkeeping career as a trainee with Barnsley, but failed to break into the first team, being released in May 1997. After playing a season with Gainsborough Trinity, he signed for Conference side Kettering Town during the summer of 1998 making nearly 80 appearances in two years. After impressing at Rockingham Road, he was transferred to Northampton Town in July 2000 for a £30,000 fee. He was released in the summer of 2002 and signed for Diamonds on 7 August 2002 after a couple of successful pre-season games, as the No.2 to Billy Turley. He made his debut in the LDV defeat at Cambridge United in October.

In what was to become his final game for Diamonds against Carlisle United just before Christmas 2002, he was stretchered off with a fractured wrist and never regained his place back in the first team, being released after just the one season. He moved back north to spend single seasons at Scarborough, Morecambe, then Worksop Town and in the summer of 2006, he rejoined Gainsborough Trinity where he remained their No.1 keeper into the 2008/09 season. In August 2009, Adam signed for NPL Premier side Matlock Town, but left in July 2011 due to increasing work commitments, retiring from the game.
