David was born in Kettering and was a product of the youth system at Rushden & Diamonds. He signed professional forms in July 2000, and made his debut in the Nationwide Trophy tie at Kingstonian in December 2000, coming on as a second half substitute. The following season, he made his League debut at Home Park, Plymouth. After turning 18, he won a regularplace in the team, making 123 Football League appearances. He played for the Republic of Ireland at Under 19 and Under 21 level and had trials at Middlesbrough.

David joined Luton Town on 12.January 2006 on a 3½ year contract after agreement was reached over a £100,000 transfer fee and won the clubs “Player of the year” title in the 2006/07 season. He went onloan to Leicester City on 27 March 2008 with the prospect of joined them on a permanent basis during the summer, but their subsequent relegation resulted in the move falling through. With Luton in financial difficulties, a fee was agreed and he signed for Norwich City on 23 July 2008 for an undisclosed sum. An ankle injury delayed his debut for the Canaries, and his first appearance for his new club came in October 2008 against Derby County. After just 20 appearances however, he joined Coventry City on 30 January 2009 for an undisclosed fee. The contract will keep him at the Ricoh Arena until the summer of 2012.  After 3 and a half years with the Sky Blues, scoring 6 goals in 98 appearances, David was released by mutual consent, and joined League One side Notts County on 19 July 2013. He made a total of 13 appearances for the Magpies, before being dropped from the side in November 2013. He was released by mutual consent on 24 January 2014, to concentrate on obtaining his coaching badges, and joined forces with several of his former Diamonds team-mates by signing for NPL Premier side King’s Lynn Town on the same day. He then went on to play at Corby Town in 2016 before taking on a management role there in 2017. After leaving Corby he began playing for Irchester United during the 2018-19 season.
