Stuart started out with Yorkshire Amateurs youth team, playing for England. He joined Lincoln City in June 1980 as an emergency replacement for the injured David Seaman, keeping a clean sheet on his League debut. With loans to Peterborough United and Crewe Alexandra in 1983, and Crewe again the following year, he eventually left to join West Bromwich Albion in February 1986 for a £100,000 fee where he became a regular between the posts. He made over 400 appearances for the Baggies in over ten years with the club. In August 1996, he went on a free transfer to Bristol City where he stayed for three seasons. In October 1998, he went on loan to Mansfield Town for two months, before joining Exeter City at the end of the season. It was while he was with the Grecians, that he arrived on loan on 24 March 2000 for two months.
After returning to Exeter, he was released and re-joined Diamonds on 14 June 2000 as second choice keeper / goalkeeping coach. He retired from playing to concentrate on coaching, but was released by Rushden at the end of 2002. Stuart returned to Bristol City where is remains their goalkeeping coach. In 2013 he moved to become the Bristol Rovers goalkeeping coach.
