Born in Bournemouth, David began his football as a trainee at AFC Bournemouth before being offered a professional contract in April 1995. He remained with the Dorset side for a further four seasons, spending September 1997 on loan at Dorchester Town. Brian Talbot brought him to Nene Park in May 1999, paying a £35,000 transfer fee and he made his debut in the Maunsell Cup win over Northampton Town in July. Despite the fee, he made only 18 more starts during the season and with the arrival of Duane Darby and Justin Jackson the following season, he found himself on the bench for most games.

He went on loan to Hayes in January 2001 for two months, before being released in March to join Boston United on a two year deal. In August 2002, he joined Kettering Town on loan and found it difficult to get a first team place on his return. In May 2003, he joined Havant & Waterlooville where he remained for two seasons before moving along the coach to Eastleigh in July 2005. After 12 goals in 33 appearances, he moved to Dorchester Town in September 2006. The following season (2007/08), he joined Bashley of the BGB Southern League Premier Division. Moving down the pyramid, he joined Wimborne Town of the Wessex League Premier Division in August 2008. He had retired from the game by the summer of 2010, working in the Southampton area as a salesman for a fire alarm and security company.
