Julian Capone

He did manage to get a longer spell in the first team in the latter part of the Diamonds first Conference season, and then became a regular in the team the following a season. A number of injuries and loan spells followed before he was released in May 1999.

In September 2002, he decided to try to get a contract in the USA, but returned after a few weeks, rejoining Chesham United. In July 2003, he joined Bedford Town again, remaining with the Eagles until May 2004, when he left to become manager of Minerva Spartan South Midlands side Bedford United & Valerio. (3 League, 3 FA Trophy, 1 League Cup)

Debut:

He was in the Ducks side which held Northampton Town to a goalless draw in the FA Cup 2nd Round in December that year. He remained with the Ducks for five seasons, joining VS Rugby in the summer of 1993. Simon arrived on a short term deal (3 months) from VS Rugby in August 1994, his deal not being renewed. He returned to VS Rugby where he remained until the summer of 1996. He is believed to have spent a short spell with Rothwell Town after leaving Rugby. No further record of his involvement with the game has been found through to 2018.

Garry Butterworth

Garry Butterworth

Born 8 September 1969 (Age 24 at debut)

Position: Midfielder

(Diamonds player #35)

Total appearances 371 – 11 goals

(286 League, 31 FA Cup, 28 FA Trophy, 12 League Cup, 1 Championship Shield, 11 Hillier Senior Cup, 2 Maunsell Cup)

Debut:

2 August 1994 (Home Peterborough United)

Final game:

6 May 2002 (Millennium Stadium Cheltenham Town)

Garry became a living legend with many Rushden & Diamonds fans, the midfielder making a massive 371 appearances over eight seasons at Nene Park. His impact on the club was immeasurable at a time when the club needed a natural leader on the pitch. He had begun his career as a YTS player at Peterborough United in 1986/1987, making his League debut in the final game of that season at Halifax Town. He played more games the following season, and was rewarded with a professional contract in June 1988. He became a regular in the first team in the 1989/1990 season, and won the “Player of the Season” award the following year after switching from midfield to left back. The following season however, he found himself on the bench more often than not, and was an unused substitute on no less than 24 occasions. After Peterborough’s promotion in May 1992, he was released after 153 appearances (and 3 goals), and joined the newly merged Dagenham & Redbridge.

He spent two seasons with the Daggers and it was in July 1994, that Roger Ashby brought him to Nene Park for a £22,500 transfer fee and it soon became apparent why such a fee was paid for him. He was established as captain the following season, and captained Diamonds to the Beazer Homes Premier Division title in 1996. His energetic displays in the midfield endeared him to the fans and his natural fitness – which led to Butterworth making a record 104 consecutive appearances – was a real asset. Garry picked up several awards while in with the club, winning the supporters “Player of the Season” in 1995 and 1997 and earning accolades from his fellow players in 1997. After winning his second “Player’s Player of the Season” award in 2000, he was a consistent and integral figure in Diamonds promotion season to the Football League. He also captained the England C side on several occasions.

Garry Butterworth

Garry’s final season at Nene Park saw him continue to impress in the Football League and despite the step up, he never looked out of his depth. His final appearance for Diamonds came fittingly at the Millennium Stadium where a narrow 3-1 defeat to Cheltenham failed to dampen the occasion. In total, Garry made 371 appearances for the club, scoring 11 goals. This record has never come close to being broken and it is unlikely that it ever will. Such is the appreciation towards him that his testimonial against West Ham United in August 2001 gathered a gate of over 4,000 spectators – a glowing tribute to player.

butterworth

He was released in May 2002, and joined Farnborough Town for the following season, making 30 appearances. He then joined Kettering Town in the summer of 2003, before joining King’s Lynn in February 2004. After a spell with Stamford, he joined Wisbech Town in August 2005, remaining there for the season. In June 2006, he became player/manager at his hometown side Whittlesey United of the Peterborough & District Premier League. In the summer of 2007, he joined Coates Athletic from the same League and promptly won the Player “Player of the Season”. He was still playing for them during the 2009/2010 season.

Darren Collins

Darren Collins

Born 24 May 1967 (Age 27 at debut)

Position: Forward

(Diamonds player #34)

Total appearances 288 – 153 goals

(211 League, 26 FA Cup, 23 FA Trophy, 15 League Cup, 1 Championship Shield, 10 Hillier Senior Cup 2 Maunsell Cup)

Debut:

2 August 1994 (Home Peterborough United)

Final game:

24 October 2000 (Home Stevenage Borough)

Darren was born in Winchester, Hampshire, and started his footballing career with nearby Petersfield Town, before joining Northampton Town in January 1989. In just over two years with the Cobblers, he played just over 50 games, scoring 9 times, before moving to Aylesbury Town early in January 1991 for a five figure transfer fee – the club’s record signing to this day. He scored a hat-trick on his debut for the Ducks, and scored on his final game in December 1992, before joining Enfield in a swap deal which took striker and future Diamonds manager Graham Westley from Enfield to Aylesbury.

collins

Whilst at Enfield, his goalscoring exploits came to the attention of Roger Ashby, and is a deal worth £20,000, he arrived at Nene Park in July 1994, prior to Diamonds first season in the Southern League Premier Division. Darren’s goal scoring record for Rushden and Diamonds was nothing short of phenomenal. Few could have predicated the impact Collins was to have on the club and his ability to produce a goal out of nothing when Diamonds needed it the most became legendary. After being out scored by Dale Watkins in his first season, Darren went on to become Diamonds most prolific scorer for the next five seasons. His most impressive hauls were in the 1995 / 1996 and 1997 / 1998 seasons where he scored 40 and 35 goals respectively. His haul for that 1995 / 1996 season earned him the supporters player of the season award, however, he improved his all round game over the following seasons. In the 1997 / 1998 season, he won the player of the season award from the supporters and also the award from his fellow players. He went on to score 152 goals for Diamonds in 288 appearances – a feat unlikely to be beaten, and a statistic which will always ensure him legendary status.

Darren Collins

Following the arrival of marksmen Justin Jackson and Duane Darby, Darren found himself out of the starting line-up, and he was sold to Kettering Town in November 2000, for a £25,000 transfer fee and was captain when the Poppies won promotion from the Southern League back into the Conference. In June 2002, he joined Cambridge City, before having a spell with Tamworth in December 2002 until the end of the season, as they too were promoted into the Conference. In the summer of 2003, he joined Grantham Town, before a period with Nuneaton Borough, making his debut in November 2003, and scoring twice. In the summer of 2004, Darren joined UCL side Cogenhoe United and was a key member of the title winning side that season. After two years with the Cooks, where he became comfortable played as a centre back, he joined Wellingborough Town in August 2006, but returned back to Cogenhoe United as player/manager in March 2007. On 12 July 2010, he left Cogenhoe to join Southern League Premier side Brackley Town to take up the position of assistant manager to another former Diamond, Jon Brady. He is still registered to play, and made his debut for the Saints in August 2010, at the age of 43. After he and Brady had many successful seasons with the Saints they left in September 2015.

Dougie Keast

Dougie Keast

Born 15 August 1962 (Age 31 at debut)

Position: Midfielder

(Diamonds player #33)

Total appearances 75 – 8 goals

(50 League, 1 FA Cup, 10 FA Trophy, 8 League Cup, 5 Hillier Senior Cup, 1 Maunsell Cup)

Debut:

26 March 1994 (Away Hinckley Town)

Final game:

31 July 1995 (Away Kettering Town)

Born in Edinburgh, Dougie started his football career with Hibernian before moving south of the border in order to take up a teacher (PE) career and joining Shepshed Charterhouse, in order to be close to his studies. After a short spell with the Leicestershire club, he joined Kettering Town in December 1983, and remained with the Poppies for some 10 years, making some 373 first team appearances, scoring 45 goals. In the summer of 1992, the midfielder moved to neighbours Corby Town to captain the side. With the Steelmen in financial difficulties, the offer of £3,000 from Diamonds in March 1994 proved to be an offer they couldn’t refuse, and he played nine games for Diamonds at the end of that season. He scored on his debut at Hinckley Town, and then became a key player during the 1994/1995 season as the Diamonds adjusted to life in the Southern League Premier and played in all but two games. The following season however, he found himself out of contention the following season, and joined Burton Albion in September 1995.

He played two season for the Brewers, before moving back to Northamptonshire and joining Rothwell Town as a defender for the 1997/1998 season. He was back at Corby Town in August 1998 and was made assistant manager. After becoming Sports Director at a Leicester Sports College, Dougie joined Leicester Senior League side Quorn in the summer of 2000, and helped them to promotion into the Midland Alliance in 2001. He took over the reigns as player/manager, gradually retiring from playing, and spent some four years with the club. In May 2006, he resigned as manager, and after a short spell at Loughborough Dynamo and Corby Town, he became manager at Stamford in January 2008. He departed ‘by mutual consent’ in April 2009, and become manager at Quorn again, this time the club being in the Northern Premier Division One South. After a poor start to the 2011/2012 season, Dougie resigned as manager on 27 August 2011, immediately after a 5-0 defeat to Grantham Town. He went back to take over at Quorn in early 2015, staying there until late December 2017.
