A skilful wide midfielder, Ian had started his career as a schoolboy with Aston Villa, before joining the Stoke City youth set up and earning his first contract. He went on loan to VS Rugby late in 1993, but was released by Stoke after the arrival of new manager Lou Macari. His ability was already known to manager Roger Ashby, having scored for Rugby in December 1993, and despite the offer of short contracts from League sides, including Northampton Town, he joined Diamonds in November 1994 on an eighteen month deal. He made his debut against his former club VS Rugby – and scored from a 25 yard free kick in the 4-1 win. Despite being transfer listed at the start of the following season, he stayed for another two seasons, scoring in his final game in May 1997 after making 75 appearances.

He was released and joined Nuneaton Borough in June 1997, before joining Telford United later in the season. He joined Aylesbury United in the summer of 1998 and spent a season and a half with the Ducks, before the club entered administration, and he joined Stevenage Borough. He also played for Chesham United, Brackley Town, Banbury United and Kettering Town before moving to Australia.  After several years Down Under, playing and coaching, he returned to the UK around 2010, and worked at Birmingham City for four seasons as a youth coach until the 2015-2016 season. He then moved on to the coaching staff at Leamington FC. From there he moved on to manage Worcester City prior to the 2016/17 season. However he left the role for personal reasons three months later. He became joint manager at Daventry Town alongside Arron Parkinson for the 2017/18 season, but left there prior to the 2018/19 season. He then teamed up with Brendan Kelly as his assistant as Bromsgrove Sporting, but left there in October 2021.
