John was a towering centre half and had played for Rothwell Town, but was with VS Rugby when Diamonds manager brought him to Nene Park in August 1992 for the sum of £7,500. He made his debut at Hednesford on 26 September 1992 with Andy Kirkup, but found his first team chances limited. He went out on loan to Rothwell Town in March 1993, which was extended for the following season. He returned from loan in March 1994, but was finally released at the end of his contract in the summer of 1994, and signed permanently for the Bones. He later played for Raunds Town (1999) and Rothwell Corinthians (2000).
