Steve started his career with Cambridge United before gaining Football League experience with Aldershot. He also had a six month spell with Danish side Silkeborg. He had been with Rushden Town at the time of the merger with Irthlingborough Diamonds, and joined several other Rushden players in the new side. He started in midfield in the inaugural game against Bilston Town, but it was to be his only start, making just one more substitute appearance. He left early in the season, joining Raunds Town, before moving to Aylesbury United the following season. He made some 128 appearances for the Ducks, before moving to Hendon in the summer of 1996, where he played over 150 games. In July 1999, he joined St.Albans City for a brief spell before rejoining Aylesbury United. He moved to Bedford Town in the summer of 2000 and retired from football after a single season.
