Andy began his goalkeeping career at his home-town club of Middlesbrough. Although making two appearances for the first team, he left in the summer of 1994 to join Bristol Rovers for a transfer fee of £10,000, where he spent some five seasons. He arrived at Nene Park at the end of his time with the Pirates coming in on an end of season loan in March 1999 to cover for the injured Mark Smith.

He made six appearances for Diamonds, before returning back to Rovers, although he was immediately released on his return. In July 1999, he moved back to the North East and joined Darlington. He remained with the Quakers for a further five years, but his career was cut short by a shoulder injury and he was forced to retire in May 2004. He became their goalkeeping coach, remaining with the club for a further five years until financial constraints led to his dismissal. He joined Oldham Athletic as their goalkeeping coach on 26 May 2009, before taking the same role at Hartlepool United on 15 December 2011. On 13 June 2013, Andy joined League Two side York City, again as their goalkeeping coach.
