Histon 0 Rushden & Diamonds 2

Two second-half goals gave Rushden & Diamonds victory over Histon at Bridge Road. Aaron O’Connor opened the scoring from the penalty spot on the hour makr after he had been pushed in the area, then Shane Huke scored with a header from a Justin Miller long throw with 7 minutes left. Jake Woolley made his league debut towards the end of the game.

Justin Edinburgh brought in Craig Farrell and Matt Johnson to replace the injured Michael Gash and Ryan Charles, whilst the Stutes made a single change to their weekend line-up. It was confirmed after the game that Gash has broken his fifth metatarsal, and will thus be out for the remainder of the season. Michael Corcoran was making his 100th league appearance for the club.

An early effort from 40 yards by Omer Riza almost tested Joe Day, but it flew just wide. Day then saw a corner from the left by Lee Smith curl across goal and rebound off the angle of post and bar.

The Diamonds then started to control the game, winning a number of corners and long throw opportunities, but the first time they tested keeper Foderingham was when Craig Farrell turned the ball into the path of Aaron O’Connor, whose effort was saved at full-stretch by the home keeper.

The nearest the Diamonds came to opening the scoring in the first half came when they tried a short-corner move on the right similar to the one that had proved successful at Cambridge, with Jamie Day picking up the ball and running towards the box, dummying twice before hitting a shot that bounced to Matt Johnson, and his effort skewed to Craig Farrell who was unlucky to see his effort rebound off the crossbar.

The Diamonds quickly reasserted their control over the game, with best chance in the first 10 minutes falling to Max Porter when he received a neat backflick from Craig Farrell, but his effort found the side netting.

As the hour mark approached the Diamonds finally got the break through their pressure deserved as a long ball forwards was flicked into the path of Aaron O’Connor, and as he prepared to turn past his marker he was clearly pushed in the back by Oyebanyo and referee Stewart pointed to the spot. Aaron O’Connor stepped up to take the kick himself, and he blasted an unstoppable penalty into the right hand side of goal.

Although the Diamonds were continuing to dominate, the home side were still capable of the odd dangerous break, with Omer Riza drawing two good saves from Joe Day.

Aaron O’Connor had a chance to double his tally when put clear by Craig Farrell, but he pulled his shot wide.

The Diamonds needed to get a second goal to seal the points, and after 83 minutes they got it. Justin Miller delivered the 15th long throw of the evening for the Diamonds, and Shane Huke made space in the area to head powerfully past Foderingham.

The game was then over as a contest, but the Diamonds still had time to give a league debut to 17 year old Jake Woolley as well as a further appearance for Joe Keehan.
